The society having run down in his vicinity, he united with the F. W. Baptist Church in West Ellsworth at its organization May 12, 1845 and remained with them until September 21, 1850, when his relation to them was dissolved. Since that time he has not been connected with any religious denomination. He moved from West Ellsworth into Surry where he lived a number of years. While there he became connected with the Order of Sons of Temperance and filled many important offices with honor. His relation to that order did not cease until after his removal back to West Ellsworth. He was one of the charter members of Hamilton Lodge No. 48 of the I.O. & G.T. He has filled some of her offices to good acceptance. As a husband, he was kind; as a father, he was beloved. He leaves a wife and two children with other relatives to mourn their loss. Funeral was conducted by the Hamilton Lodge No. 48 of the I.O. & G.T. according to their solemn and impressive ritual. Funeral sermon by O. M. Wentworth.

Resolutions passed by the Hamilton Lodge No. 48, I. O. & G. T. on the death of Brother J. Stanley:

RESOLVED that, in the death of our lamented Brother Joseph Stanley, God has come very near to us and spoken in language more impressive than a human voice and too plain to be misunderstood, "Be earnest, active and diligent in the salvation of your brother man from the curse of the inebriating cup, for soon your working days will be over."

RESOLVED that we should give heed to the warning and take a more prominent stand in the cause of temperance.

RESOLVED that this dispensation of God's providence should not discourage us but nerve us up to action, to get ready for our last charge.

RESOLVED that we deeply sympathize with Sister Stanley and her family in their affliction and point them to Christ who can bind up the broken hearted, comfort the mourner, and cheer us all through the rough journey of life.

RESOLVED that we will present the widow with a copy of the above obituary and of these resolutions, and also that we will forward a copy of the same to the Ellsworth American for publication.

Deaths

Resolutions passed by the Nerera Lodge No. 3930 of G.T. on the death of Sister FLORA M. OSGOOD, North Bluehill.

RESOLVED in the death of Sister Osgood, God has come very near to us in removing one of our number and spoken in language more impressive than the human voice to be active and diligent, and take a more prominent stand in the cause of temperance for we know not how soon our working day may be over;

RESOLVED that this dispensation of God's providence should not discourage us but nerve us up in the cause we profess to love and try to save men from the destruction of intemperance;

RESOLVED that we deeply sympathize with Brother Osgood in his affliction and in less than one short year his future prospects have been blighted. In his lonely moments may he meditate on the past and be submissive to the will of God, believing that his loss is her gain. She was a beloved and respected neighbor and citizen, and a member of the Baptist Church in Surry;

RESOLVED that we will present the husband and father of the deceased with a copy of the above obituary and of these resolutions, and also that we will forward a copy of the same to the Ellsworth American for publication.

As members of the Lodge, we design to express the deep sympathy and sorrow we feel for the loss we as a community suffered by the early departure from this life of our dear sister, Mrs. Louisa Farnham, who went to her new home May 4. We do, therefore,

RESOLVE that we tender our sympathy to the bereaved husband, mother and sister in this time of great sorrow, while we realize that, as daughter, sister, friend and wife, she has won the approving epithet "Well done!" and has entered into rest;

RESOLVED that while we acknowledge the hand of God in this bereavement, we do earnestly pray Him to administer to them the comfort which none but He can give in time of great sorrow. Of such as she was, there be few on earth; of such as she is, there are many in heaven -- and life is all the sweeter that she lived, and all she loved more sacred for her sake. Death is all the brighter that she died, and heaven is all the happier that she is there;

RESOLVED that a copy be forwarded to the Riverside Echo and the Ellsworth American for publication, and also that a copy be sent to the friends of the deceased.

Signed G. V. Mills, William Jones, and James Smith.
