Obituary: In the death of JAMES MADISON BLAISDELL, Franklin loses a highly respected citizen. Our first recollection of Mr. Blaisdell is as a business partner in trade and vessel building of the late Hon. John West, which connection lasted for some years. The Hon. West retiring from the firm, his son Joseph H. and Mr. Blaisdell continued the business of trade. In time the partnership dissolved and Mr. Blaisdell went into trade in another part of the town where the vessel building interest was continued. In 1876 he was our able Representative to the State Legislature. He has also held offices of town trust. Politically he was an avowed Republican. A devoted wife, daughter and two sons have the tender sympathy of all.

Obituary: Died in Bluehill, Jan. 18, JAMES V. STEVENS, oldest son of the late Varnum Stevens, age 55 years, 10 months. 26 years ago he left his native state for California. In the last 12 years he was in the employ of Dempster & Keyes Warehouse and Commission Mercants of San Francisco. Several years since, polypuses [polyps?] began to develop in his nose and mouth and he had several extracted, but the growth was but temporarily arrested. He submitted to several very painful and critical surgical operations which involved the removal of a portion of the roof of his mouth and a part of the jawbone. At length cancer developed in his mouth and throat, and it was evident that the only termination must be death. He had never married, and his thoughts naturally turned with longing for the home of his childhood. Capt. James Knowles of Surry, Maine, an old acquaintance and friend, providentially arrived in San Francisco from an Arctic whaling voyage in November last, and kindly offered to assist him in reaching the home of the only remaining one of his father's large family, Mr. Austin T. Stevens of Bluehill, Maine. Here he arrived Dec. 3 last, and loving friends ministered to his wants until his life peacefully and quietly went out.
Obituary: Mr. JOHN BUNKER, who died at West Ellsworth or "Happytown" the 12th inst., was a most estimable man and citizen. For years he had been in poor health. During the war he served in one of our cavalry regiments, the 1st Maine if we remember correctly, and did good service for the Union cause. Like many other soldiers, his health failed him and he returned to private life broken down in constitution. During the rest of his life he was very far from being well. He was often entirely prostrated with very severe attacks of illness. About 2 years ago he moved back to his farm at Happytown where he had previously built a new home and where he resided until the time of his death. He leaves a wife and children. His remains were taken to Brewer for burial.
Obituary: SILAS COOLIDGE, whose death was recorded in the American last week, was born in that part of Trenton known as East Trenton, now the town of Lamoine, in the first year of the present century where he had always lived, where he was married, and where he died on the 11th day of this month, age 86 years, 8 months. He was one of the oldest living members of the First Baptist Church in Trenton organized June 27, 1809 by Elder Jason Livermore, consisting of 8 members which in a short time numbered 21. He was regular in his attendance. He had been gradually failing, both physically and mentally, for some time past but retired at his usual hour the night before his death. During the night his attendant had heard him moving about his room, as he was in the habit of doing, but he had again retired and, not appearing as was his custom to his early breakfast, on stepping to his bedside he was found dead, evidently but a short time as his body was still warm. His only remaining child, John F. Coolidge of Waltham, Mass., who has always cared after the interest of his aged parent since the death of his mother a year ago, was telegraphed and was down at the old homestead in a short time and took all the steps to have him laid at rest beside his partner of life for so many years. Funeral services in the church were by the Rev. A. A. Cambridge of Ellsworth, who based an able address on the words: "All the days of my appointed time will I wait till my change comes." In a genealogy of the Coolidge family as recorded by Henry Bond: "One of the early settlers of Waltham and Watertown being that of Cambridge Common, Mass." We find the Coolidge family settled in Cambridge, England from a very remote period. The first name appears in the Subsidy Rolls of 1327 when two brothers, Walter and Ralph Coolidge, were assessed of lands in Winpole, Cambridgeshire, England. In various deeds with dates affixed was a will dated 1591. The son of the testator had a son John, born 1604, and is the John Coolidge who came to America in 1636 and settled in Watertown, Mass. From this John Coolidge we trace the family down to Silas Coolidge born Nov. 14, 1755, who became a soldier in the Continental Army and served through the Revolutionary War. After the war he was lost sight of by the family. All they knew of him until about 2 years ago was that he had settled in Maine. This Silas Coolidge was the father of the subject of this obituary notice. He settled and was married, died and was buried in Trenton, and the lately deceased had the high honor of being a son of one of the veterans of '76.

Obituary: The death of Mr. JOHN DRUMMEY on Tuesday, the 31st of January, removes one more of our respected Irish citizens who have resided in Ellsworth for so many years. Mr. Drummey came to this city from Ireland in 1846 and has resided here ever since that time. He went to California with many others from this vicinity during the gold fever of 1852 but soon returned to this city. Politically he was for many years a warm adherent of democracy, but during the campaign of 1881 he became equally as sincere in support of Blaine. Funeral services were conducted at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday morning, solemn requiem mass being celebrated by Father Quinn who delivered an eloquent eulogy.

Obituary: Dr. ALEXANDER FULTON. Nearly half a century has passed sinced he came into this town to practice his chosen profession, fresh from the classic halls of Bowdoin College. He was born at Londonderry, Nova Scotia, and previous to coming to Maine, pursued his medical studies with an eminent English physician and surgeon at that place. Early spring of 1840 found him at Bluehill, with a view to enter the practice of medicine, fresh and young, only 26 years old. In 1849 he married Miss Abby M. Redman, daughter of the late Hon. John R. Redman, who survives him and is at present one of the most prominent and popular female practitioners of medicine in this state. At the formation of the Republican Party, he allied himself with it. In the early stages of the war, he was appointed by the government a medical inspector for drafted men. At the close of the war in the autumn of 1865, he visited his native province and, while at Halifax on his return, he learned, much to his surprise, that he had been elected as Representative to the Legislature of this state. He served in this capacity in the winter of 1866 and in the following years 1867 and 1868 was elected as Senator for Western Hancock. In 1869, on account of the illness of his wife's parents who required the attendance of Mrs. Fulton through a long and lingering illness, he removed to Ellsworth. His practice in Bluehill extended over a period of 29 years. He and his wife decided to donate a town clock to his old town of Bluehill.

Obituary: Capt. SAMUEL H. WILSON. On Thursday of this week, Mar. 29, at Bellevue Hospital in this city [New York], Capt. Samuel H. Wilson of Sedgwick, Maine passed to his eternal rest. Capt. Wilson was in command of the schooner Grace Gower recently arrived here from Mexico. When off Barnegat Mar. 11 and 12, the vessel was caught in the fearful hurricane that raged so fiercely at the time. The sails were blown away, spars broken, some of the crew frostbitten, but by the exercise of fine seamanship, the vessel rode out the gale and 12 days later the property and lives entrusted to Capt. Wilson's care were brought safely into this port, and it appeared only too plainly that the intense strain, physical and mental, together with the exposure, had told heavily on the Captain for after 24 hours he was obliged to be carried to the hospital in an ambulance. He had been a ship master for 25 years, and until the voyage alluded to above, had never met in an accident. His mourning wife and fatherless children have our heartfelt sympathy.

In Memoriam: WILLIAM W. DESILES. Louis Dupare Desisles came from Alencon, Department de l'Orne, France, to Trenton in this country in 1791 as Secretary to Mme. LaVal. He was married to Mary Googins in 1796 and eventually became possessed of the LaVal estate. In a family of 7 children (3 sons and 4 daughters), William W. was their 4th child and 3rd son. He was born September 7, 1803. The youngest member of the family, Mrs. Sarah DeLaittre, now in her 78th year, is the only one now living. He was baptized and joined the Baptist Church in Trenton in 1822, being then in his 19th year. He was married Dec. 30, 1830 to Isabella Young, daughter of Solomon Young of Trenton, and they have spent nearly 58 years of a happy and prosperous life together. Seven children were born to them, 3 sons and 4 daughters; one son, Leonard Y. Desisles, died during the late war. The rest survived their aged parent. On the evening of Tuesday, Apr. 11, the soon to be widowed mother, now in her 76th year, stood around the bedside and saw him pass into that sleep. Thus died in his 85th year an honest, upright, God-fearing man. Funeral services at the church by Rev. F. S. Bickford. On the casket the loving hands of Mrs. A. Morrison and her sister, Helen Hodgkins, had laid a small sheath of wheat, well ripened, and a beautiful garland of flowers.

Obituary: Rev. WILLIAM H. PILSBURY, who died at his residence in Bucksport on Wednesday of last week [Apr. 26] at the age of 81 years and 8 months. When 11 years of age, he went with his father to Charleston, S. C., and after a few months study entered a book store. In 1829 the family returned to Maine and Mr. Pilsbury entered the school at Kent's Hill, and with the exception of a few terms, was there until 1834 when he was admitted to the Maine Conference and remained a member until 1848. He has held some important appointments in that Conference, among which was Secretary of the Conference in 1842, Presiding Elder of Bangor District and the Rockland District. In 1848, when the East Maine Conference was set off from the Maine Conference, he was given charge of a large part of the work in the new Conference. On account of his interest in education, he was made trustee of the East Maine Conference Seminary at its very organization and he has held that position during all the years since the institution was chartered, and was one of a committee of four who located the school in Bucksport. At the time of his death, he was Vice-President of the Board. He was a Royal Arch Mason, having joined the chapter in Wiscasset 38 years ago. He was Grand Chaplain of the Grand Chapter of Maine when he died. He was elected to the office of Town Clerk the year he was 80 years old, he having held the office a number of years preceding that. He has held the commisison of Trial Justice for many years. The Masonic Order has lost a faithful member and his family a tried and true husband and father.
