The Chattahoochee Country Dancers and the Centerville Community Center invite you to Join us 4th Sundays 6:30-8:30 pm, at the Library/Community Center for the Centerville Family Barn Dance. This is a casual, family and senior inclusive dance with a usual attendance of 25-50. We teach and enjoy traditional dances of the Southern mountains, New England Contra Dances, Squares, Colonial period sets and other dances of our heritage. Live traditional music is provided by a variety of string bands.
The family dance is geared towards young dancers and new dancers. While there are no strict age minimums the family dance is for people big/alert enough not to get stepped on, agile enough to move at a brisk walking pace, and mature enough to listen, cooperate, and follow the caller's lead. For more info, contact Neal Rhodes at neal@mnopltd.com or 770-972-5430.
How Young?--All of our dances are easy to learn. They all have simple patterns and need everyone involved to listen, learn and cooperate. Once the teaching is over and the dance begins, dancers cannot just drop out on a whim, without leaving a hole for everyone else. In our experience, it may be best for children below 1st grade to come and parents should be prepared to manage them if they are only ready to watch and listen. The caller will suggest an age level for each dance, and pick the complexity to suit the majority of attendees. There will be at least some dances for the 5-7 year olds.
Directions-- The Centerville Library/Community Center is located at 3025 Bethany Church Road in Snellville. (Click for map) From Atlanta: take 78 towards Snellville, and proceed past Stone Mountain. Start paying attention after passing Home Depot on your left. The next light should be Killian Hill going left, and Bethany Church Road on the right. Take the right, and follow this to the Community Center on your right. Total distance on 78 from I-285 is about 12 miles.
